Who is affected by food poisoning Each year in the United States, approximately 76 million people get
food poisoning.1 It causes an
estimated 325,000 hospitalizations and 5,200 deaths each year.2 The most commonly recognized cases of food poisoning are
campylobacteriosis, salmonellosis, E. coli O157: H7
infection, and noroviruses.3 Botulism is rare in the U.S., although the chance of
death is high if it is not treated immediately and properly. There are
generally 10 to 30 outbreaks per year in the U.S.4
